چکیده

The draft of the MPI (Message-Passing Interface) standard was released at Supercomputing '93, November 1993. The nal MPI document is expected to be released in mid-April of 1994. Language bindings for C and FORTRANwere included in the draft; however, a language binding for C++ was not included. MPI provides support for datatypes and topologies that is needed for developing numerical libraries, however the interfaces described in the MPI draft document for these two features have several disadvantages. In this paper we describe and o er examples of a C++ interface to MPI that can be used to build scalable, object-oriented numerical libraries in a language that directly supports objectoriented programming. We also introduce several ideas from the Zipcode message-passing library related to datatypes and topologies, then compare and contrast these to the MPI approach. The best ideas from both approaches are combined to make a better interface to datatypes and topologies. MPI on a Million Processors

Petascale machines with close to a million processors will soon be available. Although MPI is the dominant programming model today, some researchers and users wonder (and perhaps even doubt) whether MPI will scale to such large processor counts. In this paper, we examine this issue of how scalable is MPI. We first examine the MPI specification itself and discuss areas with scalability concerns ...

Verification of MPI-Based Software for Scientific Computation

We explore issues related to the application of finite-state verification techniques to scientific computation software employing the widely-used Message-Passing Interface (MPI). Many of the features of MPI that are important for programmers present significant difficulties for model checking. In this paper, we examine a small parallel program that computes the evolution in time of a discretize...

Implementing MPI on Windows: Comparison with Common Approaches on Unix

Commercial HPC applications are often run on clusters that use the Microsoft Windows operating system and need an MPI implementation that runs efficiently in the Windows environment. The MPI developer community, however, is more familiar with the issues involved in implementing MPI in a Unix environment. In this paper, we discuss some of the differences in implementing MPI on Windows and Unix, ...
